TestFest 2008 Workshop
We are hosting an additional workshop in May for the PHP TestFest! This is a
BYOL (bring your own laptop) workshop. WiFi, food, and drinks will be provided.
Please RSVP at meetup.com, so we can get an accurate head count:
<http://php.meetup.com/336/calendar/7986429/>
Ever wanted to get involved in the PHP development team but were unsure of where
to start? Perhaps you're not exactly a great C developer, so you weren't even
aware that your help could be valuable? Well, you don't need to be a C developer
to aid the PHP development team, nor do you need to do any fancy compiling or
building. You can write phpt tests!
The month of May has been designated as TestFest 2008 for PHP user groups around
the world. This month, PHP user groups will work to improve the code coverage of
the test suite for the PHP language itself. Aside from having the opportunity to
help in improving the language itself, PHP.net will also raffle off 10
elePHPants to submitters. Every submission (phpt test) that is considered
helpful receives one entry into the raffle. Furthermore, people that show they
are capable of writing tests entirely on their own may be given official PHP.net
accounts with direct commit access to cvs.php.net and an @php.net email address.
LOCATION
TAKE NOTE: We are meeting in a different location for this workshop! Our meeting
takes place at the Schematic Atlanta offices at the Millennium in Midtown
building (at the corner of 10th and West Peachtree streets). You will need to
sign in with security in the lobby.

Hi everyone!
Here's the info we received about the upcoming Drupal workshop. You can RSVP and get further info on their Meetup group at http://drupal.meetup.com/4/calendar/7851803/. The main user group site is http://drupalatlanta.com/.
Chris
==============
Because of scheduling conflict with other open source and web
development meetings, the first Drupal Atlanta Workshop was changed from May 1st to May 6th (a Tuesday).
In the following months, we plan on having the meetings on the second Tuesday of the month. That wasn't possible for May because all rooms were already booked on that day, but the June meeting has been planned for June 10th (2nd Tuesday).
Please find below a revised copy of the original announcement, with directions to Manuel's Tavern:
Drupal Atlanta is adding to its regular meetings a new monthly workshop. The workshops will be held on a different day than the regular meetings and will focus on a hands-on approach to learning Drupal and sharing tips.
The first meeting will be held on Thursday, May 6th at Manuel’s
Tavern in Atlanta, in the Eagle’s Nest meeting room (to the right and upstairs, from the back entrance) at 7:30 pm.
Manuel’s Tavern is located at:
602 N Highland Ave NE, at the corner of North Avenue and North
Highland Avenue.
Directions:
http://MANUELSTAVERN.COM/location.html
Mapquest:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/602+N+Highland+Ave+NE+Atlanta+G A/
There are two large parking lots in the back and on the side.
We’ll start the meeting by working on a consensus on the best way to do these workshops:
- Location, day, and time:
Manuel's Tavern has been chosen because it is centrally located, but all suggestions will be welcome.
- The most efficient way to work together:
The group has different levels of Drupal users. Some are new
users, while some are very experienced. Some experienced users are willing to help the less experienced. We’ll plan on organizing the workshops so everybody can benefit from them.
So please come on time if you want your voice heard.
Manuel’s Tavern has two meeting rooms. The Eagle’s Nest is the
smallest with a capacity of about 30 people. If we decide to keep
the meetings there and enough of us show-up, we can use the larger room where we could potentially divide into smaller groups by proficiency level or interest.
See you there!

PRESENTATION: Robust Batch Processing with PHP
Brian DeShong will present on robust batch processing with PHP, a talk he will
also give in May at php|tek in Chicago.
Offline processing is a common practice used in building scalable web
applications. Dedicating machines to perform expensive processes, such as video
transcoding, image transformation, and sending of emails, helps keep front end
webserver resources available to serve requests.
How do you make developers aware of problems with these processes? How do you
ensure that your batch processing system can scale to multiple machines? How do
you handle failure in a responsible manner? Brian will use real-world examples
while illustrating how to build a robust batch processing system.
MINI-SERIES: PHP IDEs

Key features include:
* The ability to interface with a MySQL database, PostgreSQL database or any XML
feed.
* Search any combination of text fields and weight each field differently on the
fly.
* Sphinx is published with APIs for PHP, Python, Perl and Ruby.

our IDE series or start a new series on frameworks.
PHP YEAR IN REVIEW
Ben Ramsey will lead a discussion about the many decisions made -- and those
left to be made -- over the course of 2007 that will impact the future direction
of PHP. Topics will include PHP 5.3 and 6, namespaces, late static binding,
garbage collection, Unicode support, etc. What are these features? How will they
affect you? Are they important to you? As 2008 begins, we will look ahead to see
what lies on the horizon for PHP. This promises to be an interesting discussion
that will likely bleed over into our after-meeting dinner/drinks.

Hi everyone - you might have heard us mention at our meetings that
ApacheCon is in Atlanta this year at the Westin Peachtree Plaza. It's
coming up next week! Ben got us in touch with one of the conference
producers and I spoke with her tonight. I'll be acting as "coordinator
of Atlanta PHP volunteers" (although you don't have to be a member or
have been to a meeting to be involved - feel free to spread the word).
Starting mid-morning on Sunday the 11th, they'll need volunteers for
some initial wifi setup, then the rest of the week would involve
things like putting together the "conference bag", helping with
registration, proctoring session rooms, and so on. The rest of the
schedule consists of early registration and "tutorial days" on the
12th and 13th (Mon-Tue) and regular days of talks, "birds of a
feather" sessions, lightning talks, and so on from the 14th through
the 16th (Wed-Fri). While most of the talks are about various projects
in the Apache ecosystem, there are a number of PHP, security, and
general development sessions as well as a few different keynotes. It's
been several years since they've held an ApacheCon on the East Coast,
so this is a great chance to catch one right in our backyard.
What *you* get is entrance to the conference on days you're helping
out, with the ability to attend sessions when possible. Having enough
extra hands around will allow the conference staff a chance to take a
break and actually see some of their own conference, so they'd really
appreciate it. Monday is usually the day they figure out who's around
on which days, so they can coordinate who'll be manning the session
rooms based on what talks you want to see, so if you have a strong
interest in anything, Monday is the day to be there to get your name
on the list.
They'd like about a half a dozen extra people around on each day, but
you don't have to commit to the entire week. Registration will
probably be the busiest time where they need the most people. There
are still a few final details to be worked out like the exact start
time on Sunday, but I'll hopefully have those by mid or late tomorrow.
If you're interested, email me directly with your cell (or most
reachable) number and I'll keep everyone informed (by email initially,
then by phone once on-site) as things develop.
http://us.apachecon.com/ - main site, tons of details here
http://us.apachecon.com/us2007/program/schedule - full schedule
Hope to see you there!
Chris

When: Thursday, October 4, 2007 -- 7pm-9pm
Where: Consulate General of Canada
Details: http://www.atlantaphp.org/archive/71
PRESENTATION:
Brian DeShong will present "The Grown-Up Company's Guide to Development:"
Speaking from first-hand experience, the challenges and pitfalls of
growing your dot-com into a mature software development shop, or your
little agency into a multi-office organization with a large
development team will be explored. The benefits of coding standards
and best practices will be touted, along with the implementation of
code reviews, accountability, and the methods used to increase quality
of deliverables across a software development team. Avoiding the
reinvention of the wheel leads to common code bases across projects,
and the adoption/authoring of frameworks and toolkits, thus leading to
a more efficient, nimble development team. Common development mistakes
are eliminated with proper planning and the availability of tools
allowing developers to dig deeper into their work. Quality products
and successful, on-time delivery are the end result. How can this be
brought to your organization?

We will showcase the features of another IDE for developing PHP
applications. TBD.

At the September meeting, we reeled off a number of links for upcoming conferences and events, so I wanted to post them here.
php|works - Atlanta - Sept. 12-14. The first day is for tutorial sessions that cost extra. Ben mentioned a special discount for Atlanta area developers, so if you haven't signed up yet, use the "Alumni" registration or contact Ben. At least Ben, Kevin and myself will be there, so keep your eyes open for us.
ZendCon - Oct. 8-11, Burlingame, CA.
BarCampAtlanta - Oct. 12-13 at the Georgia Tech ATDC. Only 18 slots left as of the time of this post. This is a free, open-format "unconference". http://barcamp.org/BarCampAtlanta has well out-dated info, but can give you a better idea of what this kind of event is like.
ApacheCon US (Atlanta) - Nov. 12-16 at the Peachtree Westin.
We also mentioned MS Silverlight (basically, Microsoft's cross-browser, cross-platform competitor to Flash - http://silverlight.net/) and Glen Gordon from Microsoft happened to come to the meeting and gave us a short demo. It can definitely be used with PHP behind the scenes, so we'll try to have Glen back eventually for a more detailed look.

PRESENTATION: Web Accessibility for... Developers?!?
Callie Carroll will be presenting this month about Web accessibility considerations developers should keep in mind. Callie's description follows:
Almost everyone involved in the planning, designing, coding, or testing of a web application has heard of "accessibility", or even the cryptic "ADA / Section 508". Whatever your level of understanding of accessibility you may not know how to support it during development. Web applications, in fact, seem to be getting less and less accessible by default, through increased inclusion of Web 2.0 / AJAX functionality to sites. In this talk, I will cover the following, with the PHP developer in mind:
* What is accessibility? (The quick answer: It's not just making sites work for "blind people"; It's supporting modem users, cellphones, ancient browsers, non-standard user agents, non-mouse input methods, people who hate pop-ups, your coworker with carpal tunnel, and Grandma.)
* Corporate implications: What it actually means when your boss says, "Make it accessible."
* Personal site implications: What it means when you're the project manager, information architect, graphic designer, developer, QA department, and usability team, all wrapped up into one.
* What's wrong with my site? (accessibility testing tools, reports)
* How do I fix it, quickly?
* How do I design accessible applications, and develop to support accessibility?
* Where do I go for help?

MINI-SERIES: PHP IDEs
We'll continue our mini-series on IDEs for PHP this month as Robert Swarthout showcases the features of the Zend Studio IDE.
OPEN DISCUSSION & LIGHTNING TALKS
This month, we'll take a break from more formal presentations to open up the floor for anyone who has PHP-related questions or would like to share about a PHP-related technology. The discussion will be free-form and may lead to break-out discussion groups if there is enough interest in several different topics.
We'll also allow our open discussion to spark a few lightning talks. Either be prepared with a 3-5 minute presentation, or simply stand up and talk for a few minutes about anything you wish related to PHP or related technologies.

PRESENTATION: Designing for Scalability
This month, Brian DeShong is visiting Atlanta and will continue our scalability discussions with his "Designing for Scalability" presentation. Here's Brian's description of the presentation:
"I'll focus on what I believe to be the three cornerstones for scaling an application: caching, denormalization of data, and queues/batch jobs. I'll be presenting some basic examples of each in order to illustrate why these are good practices, and how they lead to a site that both performs and scales well. Designing an application from the start so that it both performs and scales well is a great practice, of course."
MINI-SERIES: PHP IDEs
Kevin Roberts will also kick off a new mini-series reviewing various PHP IDEs with his demo of MPSoftware’s PHP Designer.
LIGHTNING TALKS
We'll round out the meeting with a couple of lightning talks from anyone who'd like to share. Either be prepared with a 3-5 minute presentation, or simply stand up and talk for a few minutes about anything you wish related to PHP or related technologies.
